We just got a new Ford F450 and Boss plow. We are building an 8x8 steel bed and we need a sand spreader. We heard that the Downeaster S-Stl Hopper with Honda gas power is the best choice in our moist climate. We've seen forum comments of guys switching to all-electric spreaders but they were mostly in midwest (dry) cold which is not as problematic for electric relays, etc. Is the Downeaster gas over hydraulic or direct drive? We heard that poly hoppers are undesireable in our moist Juneau climate because they cannot be thawed with a weed burner. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I had a Makita random orbit that I really liked. But the final drive blew out. So I bought a Porter Cable this time. I haven't used it much but I like it.

I wouldn't be worried about the electric spreaders.

A stainless spreader with dual electric moters and a bed chain would be my ideal unit.

If you go gas, go Honda.

Do you need to make the bed that wide? I would make it just wide enough to cover the tires.
