Transmission filter kits?

944 Views 45 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Mike N
I'm going to change the transmission filters and fluid in my 2015 2500 w/66RFE. I read that there were some bad aftermarket trans. filter kits out there a while ago that made the trucks going into limp mode. Anyone else hear this?

Are these WIX kits good to go? Or should I just get a factory Mopar filter kit from the stealership? @Randall Ave

ETA; I have the lifetime powertrain warranty if that matters.

Thanks, NYH1.

I've heard of places doing trans. fluid flushes without dropping the pan and changing the filter(s). That never made any sense to me.

I've never heard of adding chemicals to the trans. during the flush, other than flushing out the trans. cooler and lines after a trans. was smoked. I'm not a mechanic though.

I read many of the same posts on different filters, I decided to go MOPAR brand, found the kit on Amazon or eBay as my local dealer was waiting on stock. I have used the Valvolene max life atf+4 in all my MOPAR/ Stlantis rigs and have never had a tranny go bad ( sold rigs at 250-300K ). I don’t tow big loads consistently, a skid steer a few times a year. The additives during a flush are likely to help PH and put back in friction modifiers. Auto trans, like a wet clutch on a motorcycle cant have to high of lubricity otherwise the clutches slip. Its a really fine balance.

I would never use a flush machine again on any vehicle ever for any reason. .period.

their a scam. Especially the pH part And they don’t add friction modifier’s that’s in the ATF

Agreed with the flushing systems.

I'm just going to change the filters and top it off with new Valvoline ATF+4.

Yep, as one who has done thousands of flushes, if the fluid is not that bad, and you are not having problems, a "drain and fill" is all I recommend. Now some newer trans have huge, better filters, and changing it is not always a requirement. As I have said before, "flushes" are a huge money maker for dealers and lube shops, and not needed 95% of the time. It's right there with recommendations to change engine oil at 2.500 or 3,000 miles, a huge waste.
On contractors trucks, it was quite normal to see smoked/burnt fluid in the P/S and brake, so it is good to flush them if noticed. Even if you just siphon some out and add new.
Always check the T case fluid, never know how many times "juan" left it in 4wd, and jumped on the highway.

Just changed the T-case fluid last week when I changed the engine oil. Even went to the stealership and bought the Mopar BW 44-44 fluid.

You will be OK with the Wix filter.
@Randall Ave what type of gasket sealer/RTV should I get?

Thanks again, NYH1.
Whatever you do don’t use the Mopar silver
It’s the best. you could always substitute the permatex but you should ask Randel
Because the rest of us are just chopped liver.

I was gonna ask how you were feeling but now
Meh….
And I hope it leaks or you strip out a bolt hole

I wouldn't say chopped liver....maybe diced liver!

(I'll stay away from the silver Moper gasket sealer!)

No really it is the best,
But I also used the sliver permatex and it was very similar if not the same stuff.

but let’s wait for Randel.

Issues with flushing can go beyond what they put in, the flush can also remove debris that are helping an older trans limp along. My uncle ran a trans shop for decades. More than once a year the same story wandered in: “I don’t know what happened I just had the transmission serviced.”
Maintenance is the key. Either follow the OEM recommended intervals or don’t.

FWIW I don’t believe the Ram claim of “lifetime” fluid/filter on the 8 speed trans. Those trucks are being cycled out before the warranty expires.
They don't use a rubber gasket? No sealant on those. If it is paper, you could use a thin film of silicone on the pan side, put it together and let it sit overnight, then fill her up.

Mine didn’t have a gasket.
I’d never goop a gasket.

I'm not sure what type of gasket it comes with. I'm going to pick everything up tomorrow or Tues.

ETA; comes with a cork gasket.

Ask Randel.
Or
If a corky,,, use a very light coat of a spray on gasket sealer to hold it in place during installation.

In the past to hold the cork gasket in place I have used a very fine film of grease to keep it from walking. Be sure to clean both surfaces with a very fine brillo and spray brake cleaner on rag and wipe.

I am big fan of hating trans. flush service and not changing the filter that's bull crap. Adding new fluid into a trans. with a dirty filter NOT. I changed my wardens trans. fluid last week on her 2016 chevy ls malibu. I found out the filter is internal you have to take down pan and remove parts to get at the filter to change which is not recommended. This car doesn't even have a trans. dipstick ! Had to pull off drivers side tire to ck . fluid. So eggszacty 4 qts. of was drained and filled with 1 gal. of Castrol dextron VI full syn. Not happy but done, car had 63k miles on it. $33 total. Good luck @NYH1

PS I heard @Randall Ave does rd. service
