Transmission filter kits?

943 Views 45 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Mike N
I'm going to change the transmission filters and fluid in my 2015 2500 w/66RFE. I read that there were some bad aftermarket trans. filter kits out there a while ago that made the trucks going into limp mode. Anyone else hear this?

Are these WIX kits good to go? Or should I just get a factory Mopar filter kit from the stealership? @Randall Ave

ETA; I have the lifetime powertrain warranty if that matters.

Thanks, NYH1.

That's a whole different type of Tranny fluid.

OK anyways.
I used Valvoline synthetic ATF +4 because I believe Valvoline makes the transmission fluid that ends up in the Mopar container and is the factory fill.
Or so I’ve read on the bathroom wall.

I'll probably go with Valvoline as well.

Probably much cheaper than purchasing from Dodge, and just as good.

When the stealership replaced the valve body at around 40k miles, they changed the trans. filters and the amount of fluid that was in the pan. So, about half the fluid was replaced.

Is it ok to change the filters and only the amount of fluid that's in the pan again? I'm at 94k miles now. I have no idea how to change all the fluid.

A flush machine will exchange most of the fluid.
If yours is old enough to still have a dip stick and tube, you can do it the old way. pull off the feed line to the rad., put a hose on it, stick it in a bucket, have someone start engine, add fluid as it is being pumped out, till it comes clean. Crude, but many still do it at home.
In the old days, some vehicles had drain plugs on the torque converters.

I used a plastic tote to catch the fluid
removed the pan, both filters and I let it drip for three hours and I believe i replaced all but 4 quarts from factory Phile.

I changed it every 64 tu 75,000
I’m at 193k.

It does have a dip stick tube. I have to drop the pan anyways to change the filters.

It never hurts to change the filters.

I've heard of places doing trans. fluid flushes without dropping the pan and changing the filter(s). That never made any sense to me.

I've never heard of adding chemicals to the trans. during the flush, other than flushing out the trans. cooler and lines after a trans. was smoked. I'm not a mechanic though.
