Not sure what year you are seeing this issue with but I had a similar problem with my 2005 with the Cummins in it and I replaced the temp sensor in the transmission. You have to pull the pan and it is right there on the passsenger side of the transmission under the pan. I have been out a couple of times since I replaced it and so far so good. Hope this helps and good luck in getting it fixed.

I don't know how often those sensors fail, but I know plowing ALWAYS heats up transmissions and there's no shortage of folks on this site with their transmissions running too hot. Do you have an auxiliary transmission cooler? Has your transmission been maintained regularly with clean fluid so the cooler isn't plugged up? If you use low range (which reduces stress on the transmission) does that help?

I run a Temp gauge in both my trucks, this way I know how hot they are and can let off the go pedal before they get hot. This is really only a issue on wet heavy snow on long runs. One of my trucks has two in it - one in the pan and one in the line going to the cooler. If I had only one it would be in the line to the cooler because the one to the cooler will hit 180 F and the pan will still show 120-30 ish.
