I went through this with my 2010 5.4l F250 this fall. The engine would have been on constant for me and the biggest reason I spent the coin on new cats was my mechanic and the muffler shop told me the engine sound in the truck would have been really bad. Not just loud but not a nice sound.

Removed both cats, still has a muffler on my 05, 5.4. No CEL, and it sounds fine.

I removed the cat on my ‘99 5.4, no cel. There’s a gasket between the cat and Y pipe, I used that as a pattern to make the flange for the straight pipe into a muffler.

Isn’t there a small area on the y pipe that chokes the exhaust on the 5.4?
