Sounds like a speed sensor problem to me. Not quite sure where they are located either

Mine just did this to me last week on my 04 chevy. I am going to take it to the dealer to have it looked at.

My 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD did the same thing last week. The dealer will fix it under their warranty if its under 70k miles....if not its close to a $1000 repair!! I also know of two other 2003 GMC's this has happend to in the last month so GM definitely knows theres a problem. Get to the dealer ASAP

Very very common problem on the '03-'05 trucks... The stepper motors in the gages go bad, and it's usually the tach or speedo that goes first. GM knows it's a problem on these trucks and will cover the fix free of charge for 7 years or 70,000 mi...

I know they sent out a ton of bulletins to owners about this matter so don't be surprised if you get something in the mail about it (I just got one last week for mine). If not, head to your dealer and have it checked/repaired...and if it's the stepper motor that's the problem, DO NOT LET THEM CHARGE YOU FOR THE REPAIR! GM will pick up the tab.

This bulletin even covers you guys that previously paid to have this repair done. You can get the cost refunded if you have the reciept..even if it wasn't repaired at a GM dealer. You must have the necessary paperwork to show you paid to have it repaired though..

I your out of warranty, there are guys on Ebay selling the stepper motors. From what I have read it can be fixed buy a skilled solderer and about 25 bucks.

My speedometer and oil gauge went during the first storm in my 04. I was pissed off. Two days later I go recall letter from chevy saying take it in and get it fixed and they will cover the cost. Well I guess i will have it fixed. cause sometimes i look down and I am going like 200 MPH and I am like Wow I am going pretty fast>>>>

I know this is super old, but my 04 2500HD just got this problem this weekend plowing. My question is it bad to keep driving and maybe plow once more with it before I am free and able to take into the shop to get fixed? Thanks.

I've had this happen to my silverado as well.... but I have an 01. I had it fixed for free too.. (not sure if it was a recall though cuz my buddy who works as a GM dealership parts/service manager did it for me...)

I wonder if I got a ticket because it wasn't correct if GM would pick up the tab?! Because I know the cops around here can ticket you if your speedometer isn't working (GF's mom just had that happen). hmmm I bet it is in the paperwork from the dealership that they are held harmless on any citations caused by their machinery.... but I wonder about that one sometimes!

My GF's mother got pulled over for five over and told the cop that her speedometer went out and she was just going with the flow of traffic and was going to get it fixed in a day or so (I believe she scheduled it at the dealership for the following day) and the cop didn't only give her a ticket for speeding but wrote another one for not maintaining a working speedometer.... LOL.... sucks for her... but if it happened to me on a recall I'd expect GM to pick that tab up (If I was speeding due to the problem...and not my lead foot and rock music!).

My speedo went out and got repaired but found out only certain vin numbers are being recalled. Of course my vin did not fit within the parameters they are recalling. Hoping gm expands the vin list. List is online and yes mine was the stepper motor.
