Rusted Leaking Hyd Tank

Welder buddy is cutting out and welding in new metal on my Hyd tank .

Any thoughts on psi for an air test ?

Why?
Does it hold pressure?
Is your welder using a 110v Harbor freight special with a bad plug.

Was told around 25 psi max
I really don’t see the need.
If the guy knows how to weld, I wouldn’t be to worried about his welds.

Took 2 of us 4-5 hours to remove the tank .

Going to test it with air , water or oil somehow .
Are you going to make a cap ?
how do you intend to pressurize the tank.

Fill it with water charge it with 75pounds of air or three times the operating pressure.?

I guess if he’s a good welder I don’t see the reason why , (I know I’m repeating myself )
even I was certified so I could weld on pipelines that carried 600 psi to 2000 psi
And I’m a average welder.

Only 1/8" metal being welded to existing oil soaked 35 year old 1/8" metal .

Tu mulch psi could baloon out the tank.
Just something to think about as you said it was in a tight spot.

Grind the weld flat , go over it with body filler sand smooth . repaint with an enamel with a little extra hardener and that should be good for an additional 10 to 15 psi.

1/8"? 25 might be a bit high, might deform, unless just is small areas/patches, then should be fine. Way tto much for a thin tank, like a car fuel tank.

If small enough, older radiator shops will have the plugs/fittings to test, and a immersion tank.
Also, any thin liquid will find porous areas fast, such as gas, solvent, thinner.

I would probably use an inert substance in case you have to weld any pinholes…
Air /nitrogen would probably be best if you had a water tank where you could keep this tank submerged inso you don’t also have a substance in the Pin hole .

We use to test plastic underground sewer pipe at 2-3 psi .

When we test it I think will start at 5 psi

Didn’t you say it’s working pressure was 25 psi.

Ore,,, is This is just a hydraulic tank that’s vented to atmosphere, it doesn’t hold any pressure but I’d still test it at 10-15
And see if it leaks down.

No working pressure , just a vented tank
Radiators and hoses hold 12 to 15 lbs but I wouldn’t feel the need to go even that high. I think 5 to 7 is plenty

Up to 21psi, some rads, but I agree. And don't forget, wack it with a rubber mallet around your welds, while testing.
