I just saw the first chevy hds that are going to compet withthe ford 450&550s must of just arived at my chevy dealership .They seam to be out early too bad no 4wd yet.If any one was waiting ask your dealer they must be shipping all over.
Must be nice... I'm starting to look at that size truck for mulching this summer, salting next winter. Was begining to think....ford..., (that's a four letter word oops)hadn't heard anything about the new chevey's lately. Hopefully they'll be here soon.
I stopped at my Chevy dealer, he didn't have one, but let me look at the spec catalog.
The Chevy 4500 compares to the F-450 but not the 550, even though chevy says it does. The 550 GVW is 17500, while the 4500 is 14500. The GCWR of the 550 is 24,000 while the 4500 is 22,000. As you've mentioned, the 4500 is not available with 4x4, while the Fords are.
I don't see where this "new" truck varies much from the 3500HD other than body style. I'm a bit disappointed, I was hoping to comparison shop for a 550 type truck and the Duramax interests me. That extra load capacity is why I'm looking for that size truck, the 4500 won't do.
My dad has a 94 GMC HD3500 and that thing will haul more than my boses 99' F-450 4x4. The Chevy also is better as far as reliabilty starts after sitting a week in the dead of winter good luck with the power strokes (haha). I was always a ford man but have changed my mind about them the 450 just broke down for the second time and it was something major not sure yet, but had to be towed to dealer. The only time i remeber the HD breaking down before my boss got the 450 was when the had a loaded lawnmower trailer and a load of wet grass in the back filled to the top the clutch blew. The fords also sag considerably more when under weight they drag the tails. I dont know but in my opinion the chevys just seem sturdier and more well built.
But whatever you decide make sure its stick espeacially the ford cause there autos are bad. The new allison auto might be better.
Are the trucks availible wiht the duramax yet?? When is the 4x4 with the duramax and allison coming out in the 4500 and 5500?

I've seen the 5500 mentioned here a couple times, but the dealer I visited didn't talk about it at all. After reading Plowking's post, I'm convinced this dealer doesn't know his product very well, and the salesman was introduced as their "truck specialist".
Any specs on this 5500? The 4500 is too light for my application.
i have heard that they are 16K gvw i sat in one the other night .To tell ya the truth the inside is like the full size vans dash is set up the same except for thatit curves out in the middles like a and r model mack. has lots of leg room it was dark so really hard to see any more or look under the hood.I think that with this model you can use it for C&C's and also like a walk thru van "cube truck".still not to keen on the looks but it seams to be a nice truck.
Bringing this one back up for anyone who is interested. The dealer told me this morning that Fisher Engineering techs had been out there recently taking measurements of the 4500. Mounting kit will be available before snow flies.
these look like they will be very good snow trucks when they get there 4x4 option added .Bet they will be really jacked up high wish they had a picture of them.Why is gm keeping is so hush hish with them?
I'm bettin' against you, Cat. If you look at past performance, these trucks are likely to be low profile.
I still can't figure out why GM isn't marketing these things any better. The salesmen don't seem interested in them either. I've learned more about these things through Plowsite than I could from the dealer, doesn't say much for the salesmen.
I gotta say that your right there as far as the salesmen.Does not seam to be that big a deal about them considering that they are an all not design.Did not really push them at the Boston truck show which i thought they would.And one thing that puzzels me about G.M. is that 4x4 option that is what every one wanted that i have taked to about getting in the 15K class.My buddy could not wait for them so he got a 450.
I didn't think you were all that far from there... I never can remember the name of that dealer though. Actually now that I think about it I thinkit's a little farter up than Millerton... It's probably in Copake B/C it's right near the Falls.
