Hello there, I'm pretty new to this site, I've been a member for a few months now, and I gotta say, this Site is Fantastic!! I go to it almost everyday!

Well anyhow... I'm a position to buy a 87 Chevy 1 1/4 Ton Military Pickup Truck. Its a CUCV (4x4. 6.2 Diesel..etc) .. I want t use it as a plow truck, because these trucks are real tough. I dont have any customers yet.. What I plan to do is just do family and friends and neighbors for now... and just kinda get a feel for the buisness, and grow from there. So i have a few quesitons. How do i go about looking for a plow for one of these kinda of trucks? I would prefer used, just to keep costs down. What kinda of tires should I get? What sort of gears would be the best? 4.10? 4.56? 4.89? I plan to install a TrueTrac in the rear also..

And besides Headers/Manifolds and free'er flowing exhaust and new intake... what else can i do to wake up that 6.2... they are pretty sluggish, but great gas savers....

Thats why I picked at CUCV... Cheap, tough truck to start off with. Easy to work on. Gotta start somewhere, and with limited funds, gotta start small..

Thanks guys

Well as far as waking it up don't worry about it for now. And the gearing should be fine because you have a low gear on the transfer case. As for the plow you really shouldn't have a problem finding one. The frame should be the same as a regular chevy body. I believe any frame from a Chevy pickup, 3/4 or 1 ton, off that year truck will fit. Any good all terrain tire should be fine.
I also think you have a Dana 60 up front and a 14 Bolt in the rear. With an NP205 transfer case. These parts are readily available and very strong. Good luck on your time out if you can get a plow to fit.
I see that you are a SeaBee. Thank you for your service we all appreciate it.

Your truck should already have a Detroit Locker rear diff. And 4.10 gears if not 4.56. The only HP improvement you can do for the old 6.2 diesel is an after market turbo kit. Like Banks sidewinder.

you have 4.56 gears stock in the 1ton. th400 3 speed auto with 208 part time tcase. as listed you will have a detroit locker in the back stock from mill issue. the front if you want a traction device for good all around use is a dana spicer power lock. thay can be had brand new off ebay shipped for 400 bucks. nowparts is the seller id on ebay great guys.

as for upgrades get the turbo kit setup from banks. thay seem to be the one i hear the most about for these 6.2 trucks.

as to a plow setup good used ebay there is lots of them. any 73-87 pickup or 89-91 blazer/burban/crewcab will fit. 1/2 - 3/4 - 1 ton all the same. and with the tank of a truck you have i would look for a fisher plow. solid truck to a solid hd plow.

and if you realy want the best info and great guys try www.ck5.com best chevy solid axle site on line.

were in upstate are you? i am in horseheads.

i have a 1ton k30 with a fisher and she plows great. let me know if you are close as i have a setup for sale in the clasifieds here go look.
