For general liability, a half-million policy- what does the snowplowing exactly cover? Damage, hitting someone on the job? Does plowing insurance cover you in transport or just on the job (coevred under general auto insurance while on the road?)?

Check your policy, but in general:

Commercial Vehicle insurance will cover damage done by the vehicle or the attached equipment (plow, sander etc). General Liability is designed to cover those losses (not necessarily damage, but could be) due to the business of (in this case) plowing.

What "exactly" is covered depends on the provisions of your specific policy. The dollar amount simply refers to how much the company will pay towards a claim against you. People refer to such a "$300,000", "$500,000" and "$1,000.000" but there are actually at least three different amounts of coverage, relating to how much they'll pay for a single claim, total claims and medical expenses. There may also be an amount of coverage for loss of business records etc.
