Would putting granular ice melt down before a snow mix with sleet and rain event, be better than after or during the ice event?? Thanks

I went out last night and pre-salted a few of my accounts. Hoping to get some of the snow to melt and with expected rain in the morning it would all be melted or at least it would be easier to plow to blacktop in the morning. I have heard of people salting before a storm, but I am not sure in what case it would be best to apply before a storm. It ended up raining and no snow, so I dont know the outcome.
