From what I have heard, yes, you should expect 4500 to be available in 4WD. I'm not sure about the 5500, but I would think that 4WD option would also be available.

Here is a thread that was discussed about 4500 Series.

    Good luck.

It doesnt make any sense that those trucks are not available in 4wd. Those trucks are supposed to be the equal to Fords F450 and F550, right? Fords are available in 4wd. Come on Chevy, get with the times! :p Mike

every one should email chevy and tell them they want to buy the 4500/5500 but noe 4x4 and no word when making it a hands down winner for ford. Here is the response from them:

We thank you for contacting Chevrolet, and for your interest in our 2003
Kodiak! Chevrolet's plans for the future are EXCITING! We wish we could
share those plans with you, but it is traditional in the automotive industry
to keep all details confidential until public announcement. We have taken
the opportunity to send you some product information on Chevrolet Kodiak.
The information should arrive within seven to fourteen days.

So many market-driven design innovations have been engineered into GM's
new conventional-cab line of Class 4-5 trucks that it is safe to say the
medium-duty segment will never be the same again. In fact, the launch of the
new 2003 Chevrolet Kodiak C4500/C5500 Series trucks has set lofty new
standards for best-in-class vehicle capability, durability, and performance.

In addition to their unparalleled maneuverability and visibility, these
trucks sport improved powertrains; stronger, more-versatile frames; a fresh,
aerodynamic exterior design, and safer, more comfortable interiors. In
addition, there is a wide range of vehicle configurations to suit nearly every
medium-duty application. The C4500 Series carries a Gross Vehicle Weight
Rating (GVWR) of 16,000 pounds, and the C5500 is available in 18,000- and
    19,500-pound GVWRs.

Now is a great time to buy a new Chevrolet vehicle! Please check with
your local Chevrolet dealer to find out what incentives are running in your
area. If you need assistance in locating a Chevrolet Medium Duty dealer,
please click on the GM link below and select "Dealer Locator" along the top of
the screen. Click on the "Chevrolet Medium duty Truck & Commercial
specialty Vehicle Dealers." link in the menu.

If you have any additional questions or would like to receive product
information on any of our other vehicles, please write back or contact our
Chevrolet Marketing Support at 1-800-222-1020, between 8:00am - 11:00pm Eastern
time, seven days per week. Again, we thank you for contacting Chevrolet!

Will 4wd be available in all wheelbases? I really like the idea of the short 128" wheelbase. I would like to the turning radius...

"The Chevy Kodiak has a set-back axle and a wheelcut of up to 54 degrees – allowing the C4500/C5500 regular cab to turn a full circle in as little as 36.8 feet. The result? A best-in-class turning diameter within class 4 and superb maneuverability.*" chevy website

37 feet for a 18k truck with a 8.1 that would be a sweet truck.
