I know they are not the brightest creatures.......and bulk salt (or magic salt) might look like food. Anyone have any experience with this? I think salt kills chickens if they eat too much.

    salt and chicken

If you can keep them away from it and
block any way they can get to it they will
be looking for grit and food and they will
    poison themselves.

From my experience chickens will eat anything they can get in their beaks.

But if the chickens ate salt, would I still have to salt the chicken before I ate the chicken?

Of course not... And if the chicken died from eating salt, two less steps before cooking them.
    Pre salted and already killed.

BTW, is anyone Pre plowing this week?

Was this a serious question about salt?

Why are you keeping your salt in the chicken coop or are your chickens in the salt coop?

Don't be silly, salt in the chicken coop keeps the chicken from freezing up. Didn't you know that?

BTW chickens will peck and eat just about anything even if its not good for them.

My chickens are free range-and i was going to construct a 3-sided salt bin. It would only be a matter of a few minutes or hours before the chickens would find it.

i guess now it will be a 4 sided salt bin. (with a door obviously) I probably will just use fence for the door to keep it simple and lightweight for now.
