I have a 2001 Ford F-250 that has a clicking noise in the front end when the 4 wheel drive is engaged. I have manual hubs that turn freely and no noise is heard when they are locked in and in 2 wheel drive.

Sounds like a frozen on partially frozen universal joint. Had it happen on my 04 F250SD

Sounds like a u joint gone bad on an axle shaft. Jack it up, hold the shaft, turn the wheel back and forth. If there is slop in the u joint, replace it with greasable one. Start there. Then check hub bearings. Good luck.

BSM got it. We were posting at the same time.
