According to a 1996 Chevy commercial truck brochure I still have lying around, the 3500HD was only available in 2wd. If you want a 4wd, you have to go with the K3500. which has the a-arm front.
I see plenty of K3500 4x4's with dump beds around. Im sure you can find one in good shape. If your trying to avoid the IFS, you'll have to find an 87 or older if you want a Chevy. Otherwise, Ford and Dodge 1 tons still use solid front axles.

The GM 3500HD - 15000 GVW - Straight axle did not have a 4 by 4 factory option but Monroe truck equipment made an aftermarket upgrade kit to 4 by 4 for $10,000.00. I have seen a couple of them mostly city trucks - they have about a 4" lift so they sit noticably higher than the regular ones. GM went to the 4500/5500 new series to replace these trucks and is about to release factory 4 by 4 versions of these.
