Bad water pump?????

    I have a 1998 GMC 2500 4x4. For the past few days or so it has been leaking antifreeze from the water pump area. Do the water pumps on these trucks have a period of time where they leak before they quit working? The truck only has 58,000 miles.

    change it before it comes apart and really cost you some $$$
    50-85 k is real good for a water pump..

    I have a 1995 Chevy.I just had mine changed at 89k miles. It started leaving anti-freeze drops on the driveway. Plus I could smell it. Parts and labor were close to $275. One time my truck sat for about 2 months. For some reason the breather hole, on the bottom of the pump, spit out a "quarter" size puddle of fluid on the garage floor.

    I had the water pump changed yesterday. It ended up costing $207. $127 for pump and $75 labor. (for anybodys future reference)

    I think the 96 and newer Vortec water pumps do not last as long as the older ones.Ive done 3 so far,on trucks that werent even 2 yrs old.

    From what i was told from a friend (mechanic), he said the newer trucks "98" and up have a change in impeller design which is the cause of the shorter life. As far as the leaks each one has a small weep hole where it drips when the unit is ready to go up.

    water pump

    Guntruck's friend was right about the change in the water pump but it was not the impeller. They went from a 7 ball bearing to a 5 ball. So as the bearing starts to wear it takes the impeller seal out. They also did the same thing with the alternators & you can't swing a stick without hitting a late model GM truck owner who hasn't had to have a new alternator at least once.
    GM keeps us pretty busy here at the dealership.
