Does it have a gas vapor recovery system?

The older ones mostly used those charcoal canisters.

Feel the bottom of the filter if there is one in there.

If it is wet smell what it is.

You may have to replace that canister.

If it is not that it sounds like maybe one or 2 of your plugs are not firing and allowing the cylinder to fill up with gas.

Remove all plugs and check for spark.

    Let us know.

If so is it getting hot?
Is the air intake drawing air from the engine compartment?

    Is there a fuel leak?

Sounds like "vapor lock" to me.
Get some cool fresh air to her and try a better grade of gas.
try to stay away from gas with a lot of ethanol in it

If it is injected I would look for a fuel leak,,,

lastly check the timing and take a look at the coil also..

    just some ideas.

Try replacing the resister. The heat of running may cause it to loose contact and not start.
I carried one in the glove box when I had a Dodge Car.
