Ive only owned '77s and ive become quite fond of the yellow trim.. nobody seems to carry it though, I called LMC (i think) and they said no way.. was the trim black on all other years that used that style of aluminum trim?

If nobody sells it, or nobody has it for less than an arm and two legs, what could I use to remove the paint from old trim, and polish it up and make it shiney again?

i would try a chevy dealer about 3 years ago you could get it from them i ordered a peice of wheel trim that was yellow .

To strip the old stuff, try using aircraft stripper, available at most auto parts stores. It will not harm the aluminum. After you strip the paint you can use a buffing wheel and buffing compound (Sears or other hardware stores) to buff the stuff out. Depending on how bad it is it should turn out pretty nice. Then you can mask it off and repaint the yellow stripe, good as new. You can probably also strip a piece with black paint and repaint it yellow to match.
