1997 f350 problems

    I have a 1997 f350 diesel. After starting it and driving it for a about 15 minutes on average it will idle rough while stopped and the transmision will shift hard. Ive seen problems with the trucks idling rough but never with it shifting hard as well. Any ideas? Injectors? CPA? When it starts cold theres a decent amount of white smoke but that clears up pretty fast and is only when its cold. I dont know if that has anything to do with it that may be a leaky injectors or something.

    You should have it put on a scan tool. Ford still uses KOEO and KOER tests. Have these done and the info should help. Do not try and guess when the info is there. Let us know the results.

    I got a p0113 code which is the intake air sensor,
    a p0743 which is an open or shorted solenoid or circuit condition
    a p1393 which im unsure of.

    Any ideas? Ill probably look into the intake air sensor tomorrow and replace it cause its only $15. Anyone have any of the these codes before?

    OK so you have the first one figured out
    P0113 IAT sensor circuit high.
    P0743 Torque Converter Clutch System Electrical Failure.
    P1393 Glow Plug Circuit Low Input Bank No. 2 (Left)

    S1 DTC P1391, P1395 — RIGHT BANK AND P1393, P1396 — LEFT BANK
    Note: For running KOER glow plug monitoring self test, refer to Section 2C .

    One of the above codes will set when glow plugs are commanded on for over 35 seconds and battery voltage is between 11.8v and 14v, with at least one glow plug not being powered.
    Key off.
    Measure voltage between large wire terminal Circuit 38 (BK/O) on glow plug relay and battery ground.
    Is battery voltage present?
    Yes No
    GO to S2 . SERVICE open in Circuit 38 (BK/O) or fusible links.

    S2 CHECK FOR DTC P0380

    NGS installed.
    Perform KOEO On-Demand Self Test and Retrieve/Clear Continuous DTCs.
    Is DTC P0380 present?
    Yes No
    GO to S3 . GO to S8 .

    The glow plug ON time is dependent on oil temperature and altitude. The glow plugs come on between 1 to 120 seconds depending on oil temperature and do not come on at all if EOT is above 55°C (131° F). Verify glow plug control ON time by using NGS PID GPCTM.
    EOT temperature below 49°C (120°F).
    Key on, engine off.
    Measure voltage between center terminal of glow plug shunt and battery ground.
    Is voltage present for at least 30 seconds?
    Yes No
    GO to S9 . REPLACE glow plug relay.

    Key off.
    On the bank with the code, disconnect both connectors on the valve cover gasket.
    Inspect both harness connector and gasket for a loose fit. If damaged, repair or replace.
    Install Rotunda Glow Plug Injector Adapter 014-00935 or equivalent to the valve cover gasket.
    Measure resistance between each of the four glow plug circuits on Rotunda Adapter and engine ground (clean off a spot on the high-pressure oil reservoir to ensure a good ground).
    Is resistance less than 2 ohms?
    Yes No
    For DTCs P1391 and P1395, GO to S11 .

    For DTCs P1393 and P1396, GO to S12 . GO to S10 .

    Basically at the point you have to go under the valve cover you should make sure change put the harness/gasket and plugs.

    I will check on the transmission code as there is no repair tree in PC/ED side of the manual.

    P0743 e TCC Solenoid TCC solenoid circuit failure. TCC solenoid circuit fails to provide voltage drop across solenoid. Circuit open or shorted or PCM driver failure during KOEO. Short circuit — engine stalls in DRIVE or MANUAL 2 at idle with brake applied.
    Open circuit — TCC never engaged. Refer to Pinpoint Test C .


    Make sure transmission harness connector is fully seated, terminals are fully engaged in connector and in good condition before proceeding.
    Connect Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 007-00500 or equivalent.
    Perform KOEO test until continuous DTCs have been displayed.
    Enter Output Test Mode (OTM). Refer to Special Test Modes in this section.
    Select ALL ON Mode. Press START to turn outputs ON. Press STOP to turn outputs OFF.
    Does vehicle enter OTM?
    REMAIN in OTM. GO to C2 .

    PRESS START. If vehicle does not enter OTM, REFER to OBD1 PC/ED Manual Output Test Mode Not Functioning, Pinpoint Test MB.

    CAUTION: Remove heat shield from transmission before removing connector. Remove solenoid body connector by pushing on center tab and pulling on harness connector. Do not attempt to pry tab with a screwdriver. Reinstall heat shield when procedure is completed.

    Disconnect transmission connector.
    Using a mirror, inspect both ends of connector for damaged or pushed-out pins, corrosion, loose wires, and missing or damaged seals.
    NOTE: Refer to Transmission Vehicle Harness Connectors preceding Pinpoint Test A.

    Connect a volt-ohmmeter positive test lead to VPWR circuit and negative test lead to solenoid signal circuit of transmission vehicle harness connector.
    Place volt-ohmmeter on 20-volt scale.
    While observing volt-ohmmeter, press start and stop to cycle solenoid output On and Off.
    Is the solenoid output voltage changed to approximately battery voltage?
    Yes No
    GO to C5 . GO to C3 .

    This should get you started.
