i found a 1996 3500 dump 4x4 auto gas with 44,000 miles for $14,000. my question is about the gas engine and the 1996 tranny. does anyone know any problems with this year truck. its in mint condition never plowed and the dump has no dings or scratches. I would make it my salter truck and a backup plow truck. I didnt want to look into something thats a known bomb

the 360 gas is a pretty good motor. They don't have a ton of power but for the most part they a pretty reliable. The trans in those hold up ok behing the 360. depends how hard they used the truck, but with that low of milage i don't think you would have much trouble. I would just do a trans flush on it and should be good to go. i also would check the front end and see how much slop it has, if so it might need balljoints and some other work
good luck:drinkup:

is it the 5.9 gas or the 8.0 gas?? alot of the dumps that wern't diesels came with the 8.0 litre. either way the 5.9 has plenty of power, its all about the gearing in the dump trucks, and they are geared pretty low.

HARD on fuel, runs like a tank but will be dependable and push snow all day and night long. For me I like the gassers over the diesels expecilly as a back up truck or strickly a plow unit. As for the price it seems a little steep. For that kind of coin I would expect it to be diesel. Plus have fold down removable sides for the dump.

Sounds like a nice truck, but I bit pricey. I'd say more around $10,000 or so, but thats just me. It's hard to find a good used truck. Take it to a mechanic if you are serious about it. Doing so could save you a lot of frustration in the end.
