1991 Dodge steering box prob

    Recently purchased a 1991 Dodge 3/4 ton diesel. Steering box leaks fluid out of top of unit. Can't fiqure out how to shorten column to removed intermediate shaft off of box, any suggestions would be great....

    Remove the bolt and nut which hold on the shaft and pry with a large pry bar. It seems alittle tight but ut will come off. On the other hand where is the leak exactly. Often it is better to just replace the box. Those boxes go through H#LL with the plow and weight of the Cummins. Look for a box from a one ton gas truck or replace with new.

    While you are there look for stress cracks and weekness in the frame (steering box region) Hope this helps!!

    to get the shaft off you have to take out 2 bolts where the shaft splits under the hood in front of the master cylinder. then the shaft should pull out of the coupler on the box. if not there is a roll pin in that coupler just take a punch and bang it out and the whole coupler will pop of the box. while your in there i would replace the insides of that coupler (really easy and cheap) or get the newer style if it doesnt already.

    Thanks guys, all good ideas. Did get coupler off and on with pry bar, Replaced seals and o-ring inside box, assembled everything only to seem like power steering is not working at all. Was told by the local Mopar mech that their must be crap in the box that is restricting flow of fluid. Took hoses off of steering box and bloe air into them, didnt work. Next tryed to force fluid threw system by lifting truck off ground and turn steering wheel lock to lock, only to have fluid force out of power steer pump lid. Something isnt flowing correctly, Dont know what to do now???????????

    If you want to check flow thru the box, pull the return line off the pump, cap the line on the pump with a piece of hose and a bolt. Put the return line from the box into a container. start the truck and turn the wheel slowly back and forth while refilling the system with fresh CLEAN fluid.

    Its also possible you got some crap stuck in the bypass valve on the pump.
