I have a Western cable operated pump (bought used) and I can't get the ram to lower manually. Pump is not installed at this time, I am going through it and will be doing a rebuild on it, but if the packing nut is loosened and I back off the check valve shouldn't I be able to push it down? Thanks

K5.....Did you take off the side plate to get to the up/down
lever on the pump? Even easier take off the fill plug on
the top of the pump and push the ram down.

Watch out for fluid spray tho.......................geo

by taking the fill plug off has no effect on lowering the ram.
You must rotate the up/down cable lever counterclockwise and push ram down. as stated earlier you may have to loosen packing nut but only if has been sitting for a long time.

    Wes.....Before when I had a cable operated Western I
made the mistake of filling it while the ram was up.

It would not lower.........I took out the fill plug and pushed
the ram down and fluid gushed out of fill hole.

Just a lesson learned for me.....................geo
