IDK about the older trucks but we have a chip in our 06 F250. It seemed to give it a bit more low end power and being able to change shift points and trans. pressure were nice in hopes to prolong tranny life. We also added a K&N air induction kit to it as well. To get the full potential out of a chip you almost need to do a big air intake and flow through exhaust. Its one of those things where if you do one thing you have to do 3 or more other's to make it right.
