I have a 2000 Chevy 1500 NBS. The tail gate is closed and won't open. The handle moves feely but doesn't seem to unlatch it. Any ideas?

Does the handle feel normal or is it just kind of flapping in the wind?

Guessing the rods came disconnected from either the handle end or one or both latches. The plastic surround around the handle can pop right off, you mgiht be able to see more if you pop it off...can at least see if the rods are connected to the handle.

A common problem...try removing the panel of the gate from the inside of the bed. Spray/soak all mechanisms thoroughly w/ lubricant. You can use a pair of vise grips to carefully pull the rods, which should open the latches. Keep spraying and working the latches until they release on their own. If that doesn't happen, look for disconnection somewhere or broken springs in the latch.
