So I bought the cheapest salt dog spreader this fall at tsc because it was a old model and on sale. Well it didn't take long to figure out it was crap and needed a agitator. Soooooooo I added a chain that whips around the bottom of the bin and works quite well. The problem is that because it was only a 1/8hp motor it burned up and was under powered. It was $200 for the 1/2 hp motor. So I took mine apart and to my surprise it was a small engine starter motor with 2 brushes instead of 4. So I bought 2 small engine starter motors for $70 so I can change them out on the go. The bolt up to my mounting plate on my original motor. So my question is are all tailgate spreaders use this same motor made to only be used in short bursts?

No... Buy a real spreader and you can run it constantly for as long as you want/need too with no problems.

Blaster model, your question is answered in the name.... What does the blast or burst button do?

    I haven't seen one like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-MOTOR-1-2HP-56C-12V-1750RPM-TEFC-PERMANENT-MAGNET-/300616032348

In normal electric motors you have fans and such to dissipate heat to keep it from burning up
