Rear end

    Friend of mine turned his rear end into mush. They opened the pumpkin and showed him the teeth to his gears after they put them in a bucket. Probably the forward reverse rocking he did while stuck in the snow a couple of weeks ago. Anyways, he found a used rear end. He has a mid 90's ford ranger 4wd. I don't know much about this. There is a ring gear that has teeth on the outside of it that goes to a smaller gear and then to some sort of sensor. The wires to the sensor then must hook up to something under the dash or in the engine compartment. His old rear end doesn't have this. Does anyone know what this is?

    What you are looking at is an ABS exciter. It can be removed

    If he doesnt have ABS,just zip tie the wiring to the pumkin if there is any.The only thing id check is that the rear axle has the same ratio as the front,since its a 4x4,this is very important.

    Thanks guys. This explains a lot. This guy bought this truck at a dealer auction about six weeks ago. It was bought in "as is" condition. He has been driving it in 4wd pretty regularly as it was his first 4wd and he didn't know any better. He said it has been making some clunking noises when he was driving it occasionally. Probably another tooth breaking off. He says that the old rear end has the junk yard lettering on it like it was not original. His dash indicates abs but did not have the sensor in his old rear end for abs. Looks like maybe before he bought it the rear end was replaced with a different gear ratio. Whenever he put it in 4wd he just chewed up the gears. Now he has the replacement rear end with same ratio as the one he took out. Probably have the same problem if he puts in back in 4wd right?
