What was the reason for putting ( 4 ) shocks on the front of some pickups?

Most of them had the towing package or off road package. BTW you shouldn't just remove one on each side because they are set up to work together properly. When you buy new ones, if you want just singles, buy them for a ford that just had singles this way they are valved corectly.

They probably did that so the shocks don't fade with a lot of use. Two would spread the work between 2 shocks less heat to each. Could be a coil spring thing too, more control so the force is the same on each side of the spring. Full size Bronco's have them too.

The shocks are also specific for front or rear position on the tower.
