My local dealer has an 8' v-box Henderson spreader w/Briggs engine for $2600 NEW.......it is steel.......is this a good buy?

Also what are the biggest downfalls of steel vs. SS? How can I make it last longer? What is the life expectancy? What is the best way to keep it looking good?

    I'd say so.

    Steel rusts.

Keep it lubed. Clean out any salt after each use. Clean it up at the end of the season and spray the chain/sprockets with some type of lubricant.

Depends on a lot of things, mostly how you use and take care of it.

Touch up scratches and dings and keep it cleaned up.

the steel boxes are not designed to last for salt use. whereas the ss are. it breaks my heart everytime i see our box rusting away. at the ene of the season spray them down with Salt Away or a combo of diesel fuel and motor oil.
