i just finished installing a new 750 cfm edelbrock carb and performer rpm intake,i turned my distributer to get it to fire and when running it smooths out at high rpms but will not idle, and it also shot a fireball out of the carb when i turned the mixture screws!could this be my timing too far off!!

Sounds like it's too far advanced, try retarding it some by turning it (the dist) clockwise.

Float level could also be to high, and it's flooding at idle.

maybe you should start by setting the timoing with a timing light.at least then you'll rule that out.It sounds like timing to me
