My pump is leaking around the lift shaft? The shaft is pitted which probably tore a notch in the seals. Whats involved in putting new seals for the shaft on this old cable style pump? And also should I replace the shaft or can i finely sanded to remove the rust pits?

If its pitted bad enough to tear out the packing set then you need to replace the lift cylinder also, otherwise you will be right back where you started.

Yes, remove the packing nut and the lift cylinder and seals will slide out.
