This is something I thought of for those of us not running a spreader. I read somewhere that because the plow is way in front of the axle, the effect of the weight on the front axle is greater. and then I saw this pic which Inspired a different way to do the rear ballast. (read my explanation under this pic)

I'm not saying to use a spreader. But fabricate a a box out of sheet metal, angle iron and to mount the thing into the trailer hitch receiver, square tubing and weld it all together. a hinged door would go on the top and whatever you want to use for weight, dump it in- except saly because you'll have rust holes in no time.

Good idea or bad? Let me have 'er! I can take the criticism- in fact I encourage it!

Nah, I think it will be over "counter-weight". Just saying.

And what happens when you forget about it and back into something?
What about when you want to open your tailgate?

Exactly what I was thinking. Why make your vehicle longer when not necessary? Making it more difficult to turn around in tight spaces. I wouldn't reinvent the wheel. Put a 2 x 12 in the slots behind the rear wheel wells and throw in a bunch of tube sand or whatever your choice for weight is.

Just put 6-800lbs against your tailgate (in your bed) and forget about it. I don't think the extra 12" is going to make a difference.

The 1st question: i'd sell my truck for a prius.

The 2nd question: I thought of that and figured I'd shape it rectangular and be a little higher off the ground than the diff and and be no higher than a dropped tail gate. It'll protect my chrome bumpers should a Bramptonite rear end me ;)

Why not just get one of these? They you can mount your weight WAAAYYYY behind the rear axle to counter the weight of the plow.
