I need to move a 1983 490 John Deere Excavator with no engine. I do not have access to a larger machine and can not move it with a 4WD backhoe, the tracks on the 490 are locked and I would like to know if anyone knows how to release them. Pressing the pedals does nothing and I assume there must be a way to do this.

    thanks.

Can't help you but it sounds like a MAJOR project. By the way.........What happened to the engine??

    brakes

I'm not a J.D. mech but If you take the covers off your hubs, take the drive gears out and put your hub covers back on ( to keep dirt out) that should do the the trick. It's still not going to pull easily though.
