    1500=1/2 ton
    2500=3/4 ton
    3500=1 ton
    as far as nowadays.

    It does get confusing.
    With the new body style it got even more so.

    Old Body style:
    reg 2500 - 5 lug wheels was a 3/4 ton with 7200GVW
    2500 - 8lug wheel (C6P) option was a heavy 3/4 ton at 8600GVW
    Then the 3500 was a 1 ton at 9200 GVW (SRW)

    New body style:
    reg 2500 is 3/4 ton at 8600 GVW
    2500HD is a heavy 3/4 with 9200 GVW
    3500 is one ton at 9800 GVW (SRW)

    So you can see if you compare an old 3500 one ton it is equal to todays 2500HD. The HD is still called a 3/4 ton because the 3500 is the one ton.
    If you aren't confused yet then try to figure out the 1500HD is it a 1/2 ton or a 3/4?
    I just look at the GVWs and don't pay much attention to what GM calls them.

    Same goes for Dodge- 1500 based on GVWR can be 1/2 ton but is usually more like just shy of 3/4 ton. 2500 is a bit over actually 3/4 ton and the 3500HD is a 1 ton. For Dodge up until 03 (I think- it was the new body style) the 3500 was DRW only but was about 1-1/4 ton and higher( HD was available just like the older Chevys for 2-1/2 ton)

    a 2500hd diesel is about 6600 dry weight. gvw is 9200. Thyat means payload is a little more than 2500 lbs. I would say thats a good ton.
