Was poking around IL's "bidding" site, and found some information on how they formally approached liquids this season, thought it was worth sharing. There's much more, but this is the technical stuff that seemed most appropriate. Very telling that they seemed to have steered away from liquid mag altogether. Also interesting that they specifically reference the PNS. Lastly, the LCS reference product seems to be Caliber (also found in Snow Slicer, produced by Central Salt), while the "Organic Accelerator" they reference is SNI's Geomelt-55 or similar.

    Enjoy!

LCS CONCENTRATE IS A PERFORMANCE ENHANCING ANTI-ICER/DE-ICER ADDITIVE
THAT IS DERIVED FROM CORN AND IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO ENHANCE THE
EUTECTIC POINT, MELTING CAPACITY, AND VISCOSITY OF (NACL) BRINE WHILE
    ALSO REDUCING CORROSION.
    TYPICAL ANALYSIS OF LCS CONCENTRATE:
DISSOLVED SOLIDS (DERIVED FROM CORN): 55% - 60%
    SPECIFIC GRAVITY: 1.304 + OR - 0.04
    PH: 3.0 - 3.5
    MISCIBILITY IN WATER: COMPLETE
    APPEARANCE: CLEAR TO DARK AMBER/TRANSLUCENT
    ODOR: NONE
    ASH: 0.3%
    CARBOHYDRATES: 53% - 55%
SETTLEBLE SOLIDS: >99% PASSING 100/MESH SIEVE
NOTE: PRODUCT SHALL NOT CONTAIN ANY MAGNESOUM CHLORIDE IN ANY FORM.
LCS CONCENTRATE IS DESIGNED TO BE BLENDED WITH (NACL) BRINE. THE
BLENDED PRODUCT, LCS, SHOULD CONTAIN 10% - 20% LCS CONCENTRATE. WHEN
MIXED ACCORDING TO SPECIFICATIONS WITH A PURE (NACL) SOURCE, LCS SHALL
NOT CONTAIN ANY HEAVY METALS EXCEEDING THE FOLLOWING LIMITS*.
    ARSENIC 5.00 PPM MAX
    BARIUM 10.00 PPM MAX
    CADMIUM 0.20 PPM MAX
    CHROMIUM 0.50 PPM MAX
    COPPER 0.20 PPM MAX

    PHOSPHATES 25.00 PPM MAX

    * IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TESTING PROTOCOLS ESTABLISHED BY THE PNS

    APPLICATIONS:
LCS DE-ICERS CAN BE USED FOR ANTI-ICING, DE-ICING, AND PREWETTING OF
ABRASIVES AND ROCK SALT. IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY USING LIQUIDS, NO
MODIFICATION OF YOUR EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE NECESSARY.

    BLENDING:
LCS CONCENTRATE SHOULD BE BLENDED 1:1 IMMEDIATELY WITH (NACL/CACL2)
BRINE UPON ARRIVAL. THE (NACL/CACL2) BRINE USED WILL CONSIST OF 6%
    (CACL2)-(32% CONCENTRATION) AND 94% (NACL)-(23% CONCENTRATION).
AGITATION IS REQUIRED EVERY OTHER DAY TO KEEP THE PRODUCT AT THIS
RATIO IN SOLUTION. TO PREPARE FOR APPLICATION, MIX EVERY 20 GALLONS
LCS CONCENTRATE TREATED WITH 1:1 WITH (NACL/CACL2) BRINE WITH 80
GALLONS OF GALLONS OF 23% (NACL) BRINE. THE FINAL RATIO OF THE LCS
    DE-ICER SHOULD BE 10% CALIBER LCS CONCENTRATE, 3% (CACL2), AND 87%
(NACL) BRINE. NO FURTHER AGITATION IS REQUIRED.

Funny afterthought--while SNI's product was specifically mentioned, their bid--while submitted--was not considered.

The Portland Cement Association did a study...They found Mag Chloride More aggressive towards concrete than Sodium Chloride...I think the reason they want mag chloride out is Bridge decks....

The mix ratio is not much of a surprise. To me after playing with different ratios, settled at a max of 10% cal chloride and 90% salt brine. Any thing more with the cal chloride didn't seem to enhance the mix. Also not a surprise with the SNI's super high priced product. But this winter I seen no action with liquid use by the state trucks around my area. Just rock salt and no liquid tanks.

I spoke with a liquid supplier today about next season, mainly does municiple work. They sell only calcium mixed with organics at various rates. He used to sell mag, cited similiar study, knew the chemistry behind it. It was a VERY educational hour, to talk to someone who knows the products they sell, can back up what they say, etc. He also turned me onto a supplier for spray equipment fairly local (1 hour away). He even knew why & explained why I've been having minor issues with my current salt supply that comes pre treated, knew their product, procedure, etc. explantion was not enough organics, their mix is 4 gal/ ton with 99% mag solution. Definitly a seems like a great contact & supplier.
