I'm unsure of what gauge wire to use when it comes to 12v systems, Is there some rule of thumb for 12v systems ??

Depends on the amps being drawn on the particular circuit. I personally never use below 18 ga but normally run 16 ga or thicker. But it depends on the amp draw of the item.

    I'm re-wiring my headlights, so I want to say two 60 watt bulbs. 60 x 2 ÷ 12 = 10amps

14 ga wire. That should be good. If you want to go a little heavier than go with 12 ga.

Agreed! 14 is a good wire to use for the majority of applications. I always went larger wires due to the fact that you never knew when your going to upgrade and have a larger amp draw!
