How is the crank speed when hot? Is it spinning ok and just not catching? Or slow and laboured?

Some GM starters were prone ( in the past ) to slowing down / binding to a stop when warm / hot.
The radiant heat from the exhaust heats them up and slows them down .
If it's got a lot of miles and the starter has not been changed, think about replacing it.
