Does anyone here have a link to a GOOD vin decoder site that is free? I keep finding ones that want $ to tell me stuff about my neighbors or only list passenger cars.

Reason is I went to get an oil filter the other day and it listed like five different V8's for 2000and there are a few different filters so I want to get the correct one. The other thing is the guy I bought the truck from said the engine was replaced with one from an '05 (which I kinda don't believe) but could potentially add to the confusion.

If he claims it's an '05 engine then you must be working with a Silverado bodied truck. So if thats the case simply use a filter application for the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 series engine from any year 2000-2009. Doesn't matter, they all use the same one.

It's the old style body, looks like the 90's trucks. Sorry for my ignorance but is that the silverado body?

Is the engine code the 8th vin digit?

The engine code is the 8th digit. If you've got the older 90's style body, then he's full of crap if he says the engine is out if an '05.

Open the glove box and look at the RPO list. This series of codes lists EVERYTHING about your truck as it came from the factory...OEM motor, tranny, rear end ratio, front end ratio, colors, what kind of mirrors...everything.
