I know that my gas gauge on my '02 2500HD are not very accurate either. It seems to be about 1/8 tank off at times. But the truck has a low fuel light indicator message so if I am running pretty low it should warn me. I don't think it is connected with the gas gauge but I could be wrong. Sometime the low fuel light comes on when I am just about at the red E mark, sometime when I am about two notches away from the E mark (1/8 tank left). GM really need to work on making a better gas gauge. With the truck buring alot of fuel, you don't want to be caught by suprise running out of gas in middle of highway.

Since your truck is '01, you could bring it in for warranty work.
