One of my friends has one 1998 2500 (360 magna-crapo) he use to talk it up all the time,
    until I drove it.

It couldn't spin a tire if you were power breaking it, on a beach in the sand.

    No power at all.

The 5.2 and 5.9 in the half tons are nice.
In the 2500 the 5.9 has less horsepower and more torque and feels a little sluggish but the towing capacity is pretty good.

    I've run the 5.9 in a '97 club cab 1500 and a '96 reg cab 2500, both with 3.55's
The club cab with 33inch tires would run circles around the reg cab with 265 75 16's. Even when towing light loads (5000-7000 lbs)

gears.......... Some base trucks got 3.23 gears and they seemed to have a lot less power then 3.91 and 4.10 geared trucks. all motors were within 20 hp (360 in a 1500 and 2500 or 318 in a 1500 and 2500)

there was not any less power, but more when it started to make the power. 3.23 truck don't do well from a stop but is alot better at or above highway speeds. both the 3.91 and 4.10 truck do alot better from a stop and not so well above highway speeds

    hope this helps

I have a 99 Dodge 1500 with the 5.2 318 and it has 3.55 gears in it and it does damn will with the 33's on it and it has damn good take off power as well. It has enough power for me, even with the 33's on it I can still get posi out of it power breaking, might get single every now and then.

I have driven many Dodges. The 5.2 feals like a slug to me. The 5.7 is better. The best Dodge engine IMO is the 4.7 in the Dakota. My dad has one and man that is a great engine. Zero problems, plenty of power for the size of the truck, and smokes them like a Vette... OK maybe not that well!

I agree motoxdk24. My 5.2 I had I had in my '87 Ram had 178,500 on it when I sold it. Was still running good. the guy that owns it now has around 194K and nothing too wrong yet.

my last dodge 2500 had the 318 and my new 97 2500 has the 360. To say the least I was a bit disapointed with the 360. I expected MUCH more out of it. Only time that it is worth having is when I am towing more than 6000lbs. My old truck would run circles around the new truck with the 360 in acceleration and just fun to drive. To say the least I am a bit dissapointed with the 360 figured I would have seen a bigger differance in power acceleration ect. I would deffinitly own another truck with the 318 as long as I didnt plan on hauling any extremly heavy loads.

I would get a diesel if i could justify the added cost, but for now the Ford V10 has pleny of kick for me.
