Ok for a Vin number, the first digit is country of origin a number 1-4, 1&4 are USA built. 2 is canada,3 is mexico

    2nd letter is manufacturer - G= GM

3rd letter is a letter its the make of vehicle C is usually cheverolet truck,T is GMC truck.

4th is GVWR /brake system class a tahoe should be 6200-6800 GVWR and this class should be letter E on the VIN.

5th is a line and chassis type this will tell you if its a 4x4 or 4x2. some 4x4 numbers used by GM are T,(s series),K,(CK series) you should have a K if its a 4x4,and a C if its 2wd here.

    6th series 1= 1/2 ton, 2= 3/4 ton 3= 1 ton

    7th body type #6 is a suburban,

    8th is engine code

    9th is a check digit

    10th is a yr code s = 1995 t = 1996

    11th is assy plant 3= detroit,8= shreveport,la

    12-end = sequence number

    Good luck John

VIN # won't give you much on options (except for engine, and some brake\susp info from GVWR class) and color, you need more info from the door sticker for specific stuff.

I have all the VIN decoding books,so if you need any more info (John D gave most of it) let me know.
