I have a 2002 2500 HD and am wondering if I can connect my ipod to my stock AM/FM/CD stereo directly? I tried one of those FM transmitters with less than impressive results. An ipod salesman told me that I could use the connection meant for an optional CD changer. I really don't want to buy a whole new stereo.

    Anyone have ideas?

try calling crutchfield. I just went through exactly what you describe and ended up ordering a cable from them. Cable plugs in to Ipod, then in to existing plug in back of FACTORY Ford radio. Made by PIE.

I know they have them for all the major brands.

Try JP Customs. They have "everything" for GM trucks.

There's a number of aftermarket adapter out there that are plug and play that don't use a transmitter.
