What is the chemical name for rock salt and what is the chemical name for others like ice melt or safe step (the pellets and flakes)?

Is ice melt and safe step calcium cloride??? then what is rock salt?

Rock salt is Sodium Chloride. Same stuff found on your kitchen table only in a different form. Ice melt could be anything, read the label, most are blends of different chlorides, i.e., sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, etc.

There are 3 types of ice melters that are bagged

    1) calcium chloride which works great but is highly corrosive

    2) blends with a high amount of calcium in them along with potasium, magnisium, and other fillers which works well

    3) blends with a low amount of calcium which dont work

And then there is Magic which defies logic.
