Not sure whether this has been beat to death or not but I was just curious what the advantages or disadvantages are to the two different styles of dump trucks (central hydraulics vs electric) as far as dumping capabilty, running salt spreaders, etc.

Is one better than the other?

I don't think there's much question that the central is superior to the electric in pretty much every case other than the initial cost.

I have had several and would not consider another dump truck without central hydraulics unless it was too cheap to pass up and I was planning on flipping it. Central hydraulics are very nice to use and ours dumps so much better than the trucks we have had in the past without it.
