I have an 84 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 350 for some reason the alternator doesn't charge the battery and the alternator is brand new the electrical system has been messed with by the previous owner, The hot lead to the coil runs right from the fuse box and not from the harness. Any help would be apreciated.

Try this, start the engine and check if you have voltage out of the big terminal on the back of the alt.. If so the alt. is good and you have another problem. If not the alt.is no good and probaly from Auto Zone. Also see if you have any power to the wires that plug into the side of the alt. one of these should have power to it to excite the exciter. Sounds weird, but true. This helps in the voltage out put of the alt. . If you don't have any power there hook up a jumper wire from the battery to one of the terminals on the side of the alt., then check for voltage. Don't forget use a jumper wire with a in line fuse on it just to be on the safe side of things. By any chance yoy do have voltage at the rear of the alt., run a jumper wire from the rear of the alt. to the postive on the battery. This should be charging your battery now. If so, make sure you use heavy gauage wire like 10 gauage or so.As far as the wire to the coil as long as its on the key side of the fuse box its okay ;)
