I am new to plowing and just bought a truck with a old western plow not sure what kind exactly but the hydraulic ram only goes up until the weight of the plow is on it then it stops and doesnt actually pick up the plow what could it be
is it an old red (or would appear to have been red) cable operated pump? in other words the controller in the cab has 2 cables coming out of it? if so my best guess is not enough fluid, the cable isn't adjusted right or, the pump is too weak and needs replacing. does it go up all the way without the chain hooked up? does the plow angle back and forth ok?
yeah its on of the red ones it will move left and right fine the screw for the up/down cable adjustment broke and i got the cable to stay in but not sure if its in the right spot i wasnt able to find the right type of screw to hold it in but it goes all the way up without the chain hooked up
it's hard to say what the "right spot" actually is. i know with my pump if i put the cable where it should be it don't work correctly so i put mine where it does work good then tighten the screw. i've never understood why western used such a small screw anyway. if you were/are able to get the broken screw out i would take the screw out of the angle cable and use that one just for testing purposes. on my pump i use a longer allen head screw that sticks out of the pump. that way if the head gets rounded off or anything i can always put pliers on it. have you made sure the fluid is full? once the fluid is full try pushing the cable in all the way then see what happens. all the way might actually be too far but try it at various spots or if you can get a second pair of hands take the side plate off, pop the cable off, have someone sit in the truck and move the controller to the raise position while you move the part of the pump the cable was on down. it's possible your cable is stretched out also.
The cable with the screw in it is for your up and down action of the joy stick. You probably have to adjust the cable until it is in the right spot and it will lift your plow properly. The left and right angle is the other cable. no need to adjust this one.
