I don't think you can adjust the timing on a 97 (96 on). It is all controled by the electronic spark timing system. May be with a reprogram of the pcm?

The timing is not adjustable. If the distributor is removed and reinstalled for whatever reason it only has to be close, the computer will do the rest. If the cam sensor angle is off to far it will turn on the check engine lite. To get it into correct sync you must use a scan tool that displays data. Why do you think you need to adjust timing?

aye computer does it all but...

had to replace intake gasket ..dist came out...did not get it back correctly initially...it is in correctly now and close but it still needs to be set at a o point or a starting point for the computer to correctly adjust....it now runs ok just a bit re-tarded need to advance a bit but do not want to over do it

i think i read somewhere today to un plug an est wire (brown and white) to manually check timing

IT ONLY NEEDS TO BE CLOSE. The computer will COMPENSATE. If it runs and the check engine lite does not come on it is close enough. It is a sync signal to the computer. If it is off the check engine lite will come on. To get it exact will make NO difference.

EST wire was on pre 96 year trucks. If you want to see the actual Sync degrees you will need a scan tool. Trust me though if its close it will be just fine. If is not the Check Engine Lite WILL come on.
