Trans newb, but couldn't you use a 4 speed as a replacement? Isn't that what they had originally? The 4l80 hydramatic?

5 speed manual? that would be a new venture 4500 cast iron top is aluminum where shifter attaches (5th is a over drive)
aka nv4500 if ur doing a search
a 4 speed is a sm465 full cast iron (non overdrive)

new venture 4500's are expensive! and sought after.
if i where you best to have your rebuilt. i have a nv4500 2wd i will sell for parts if you need it.

you could also try putting a ZF6 the newer 6 speed manual; though they are just as hard to find. it should bolt up since it will bolt up to any engine a 4L80e will bolt up to. ebay has both trannies though I would make sure you trust before bidding. I think the ZF6 is a better option since they made them for Ford and dodge as well. plus who wouldn't want a 6 speed? http://compare.ebay.com/like/320430979157?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&rvr_id=208891231651&crlp=1_263602_309572&UA=WVI7&GUID=a38074c212b0a02653013931ff2a9199&itemid=320430979157&ff4=263602_309572

nah, if you want a 6 speed NV 5600..... thats whats behind the dodge cummins diesel.
the parts are more readily available then a zf trans. mostly zf is a ford thing.

Im gonna take mine to a shop and see if its rebuildable.... The guy i bought it from said the housing was cracked but he really isnt mechanically inclined...

As far as the 2 wheel drive one, I wonder what that will require to make work on my 4x4 ??

"i think" you can swap out the tail shaft.
try dieselbombers.com they are fairly knowledgeable on these.
there is alot of cummins guys there and they love these transmissions.

damn that one is like an hour from me... but from my understanding it will only fit years 1997 - 1999.

these can be a bit tricky to reman. few special tools.

and also thay need some special parts not cheep aftermarket parts.

plus thay take special oil in them or thay burn up and also shift vary hard if you use std gear oil.

also on a good tranny or reman unit everyone says over fill it 1/2 qt to keep the front input bearing lubed good.

i am a auto tranny guy my self so sorry cant help much more.
