I got a 1991 chevy 2500 and I cant get the 4wd to work. doesn't work in 4h or 4L. the shifter moves fine and feels like it is engaging in the transfer case but I am getting nothing out of the front wheels. I wont be able to work on it tomorrow because I am at work now. Just want to get any suggestions to point me in the right direction. any help is greatly appreciated!

and just to add in, the truck isn't making any weird noises or grinding at all.

engage the transfer case and crawl under See if the driveshaft is locked. IF not there is an issue with your tcase.

IF its locked then your front axle is not locking. That means your actuator is not working.

Pull the actuator off the front axle and apply 12 volts to it. It should expand if not thats the issue.

This is what it looks like. [IMG]
The plug might be different. But the diagnosis is the same. IF it expands when 12 volts is applied Then check your harness for power.

    Report back with your results.

the actuator is common to go. One time it went out while plowing. What I did was took the actuator out Put a nut inside where the actuator goes and screwed it back in. What the nut did was pushed in the engageer and I had 4wd again. Sadly I drove home with my front end locked till i fixed it.

Now I carry a spare with me.

    Common problem.

Google "Posi-Lock cable actuated shifter, " and replace it once.

did you apply 12 volts to the actuator? Did it expand ?

Did you check the actuator harness for power?

either your battery or a small battery charger. and to check for power at the harness you can either use a multimeter or a test light.

On a side note, I found a 3 pin plug just sitting on top of the transfer case and cant find out where the hell it goes. And also when I put it in 4wd the steering feels a little more tough like it is in 4wd but the tires are not jumping when I turn really sharp
