Can someone tell me what trannys are in these trucks? The manual and auto? A 5 speed off a 350 would basically disintegrate behind this 454 I'm thinking. I have a line on a 89 3500 w/ 454 auto, rough body, 60,000 on a GM crate 454, 180,000 on the truck. All kinds of new parts on it but he said the tranny is acting up. $1250. I suppose it will be another $1500 to rebuild the tranny and change the TC. I have an 89 1/2 ton to donate for the pedals and such. Any suggestions?

I should have mentioned it is a 4x4.

They are the same tranny auto and manual. But it wouldn't be a direct swap, flywheel or flexplate (depending which way you go) would be different

An auto in that truck will be a TH400, no OD.

I missed the 1/2 ton part, thought he was just asking BB to SB and trannys

I just so happen to have a rebuilt Turbo 400 for that truck if interested.

if the auto is a th400 they are still readily available, I'd just find a good used one for $300 and save the $1500 rebuild money. Wicked easy swap to do, Changing to a 5 speed might make it a more fun truck to drive, and definitely help on fuel, but it's a ton of work and will be a pita to plow with. A 454 will eat a manual transmission if you let it. Keep it stock and drive it like an old lady and you'll be fine.

Find out more about what acting up means. Might just be a vacuum modulator or something simple. 400s are a little difficult to kill.

The SM465 manual 4 speed was used up until 91. Its a great tough tranny and is my all time favorite. Gear ratios are 1st(granny) - 6.55:1, 2nd - 3.58:1, 3rd - 1.70:1, 4th - 1.00:1. Reverse - 6.09:1. Its an excellent tranny. I have one in my 79 and love it. The auto would be a turbo 400. Its a 3 speed with no overdrive. As far as a 5 speed manual, the NV4500 was used in 1/2 tons all the way up to 1 tons and is a pretty tough tranny as well. For a couple of years,I think 92 and 93, GM offered it with a 6.32:1 first gear ratio. Dodge also used the NV4500 as well.
