I currently have an 01 8.1, I love it! But it slugs the fuel. My question is, with a Duramax, you'd get better mileage (what I want), but with plowing, will the additional weight of the Duramax engine, thus increasing frequency of replacing front end parts costs, cancel out the fuel cost saved from the better mileage of the Duramax? Has anyone made a switch and analyzed their numbers?

You would never notice any frequency difference in changing front end parts. Not that big a weight difference to matter and you can always use more counterweight if it worries you.155K miles on my LBZ,3 Winters with my 9-2 Boss, all original front end parts, including brakes.
